Water Desalination Using Electronic Friction Acting on Salt Water Flowing Past Electrically Conducting Walls


As water shortages become more common throughout the world, a need exists for new water purification processes that can convert saltwater to clean drinking water. The currently-utilized process of desalination involves the removal of dissolved salts from seawater and other salt water sources by either distillation or reverse osmosis. While this process renders water from these sources fit for human consumption, both distillation and reverse osmosis have serious drawbacks that can make them difficult to implement. Researchers at FAU have developed a device that removes salt from water by pushing saltwater between two or more conducting structures. This process easily separates salt from water without the need for filters.
